A Ministry of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary

History

Our Lady of Consolation Aged Care Services Limited (OLOCACS) is owned by the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, an international order of religious women, within the Catholic Church, founded in India in 1877 by Helene de Chappotin.

The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary have dedicated themselves to promote a more just and human way of life for all peoples. Participating in the mission of Jesus Christ, their inspiration derives from the Gospel, after the example of Francis of Assisi. Today the global community of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary numbers 7,500 sisters of 80 nationalities living and working in 77 countries.

In 1946, six (6) Franciscan Missionaries of Mary arrived in Australia from Canada, Ireland and England. The sisters began to care for women in Surry Hills, Sydney, who were either destitute, socially at risk or intellectually disadvantaged. The founding sisters assumed management of the institution which became known as ‘Our Lady of Consolation’.

With the numbers increasing, a larger property was sought and found at Rooty Hill in the Outer West of Sydney, on a five-hectare site which was formerly a golf course and country club.

On July 25th 1959, Our Lady of Consolation was officially opened and the residents moved from the inner city to their new environment at Rooty Hill. In 1962 – 1963 the original buildings were extended to cater for up to 300 aged-care residents. An ongoing program of building replacement and enhancement has continued and all the current 303 residents are accommodated in modern, contemporary buildings. All residents are now accommodated in single rooms, with the exception of five (5) double rooms in the nursing home.

From 1989, Our Lady of Consolation commenced providing services in the community in addition to the residential care services offered previously. These community services were funded under the Home and Community Care (HACC) program, in response to identified need in the community for support services enabling people to stay in their own homes for longer.

Today, Our Lady of Consolation Aged Care Services operates a broad range of community aged care services, including complex care services such as Community Aged Care Package (CACP) services, Extended Aged Care at Home (EACH) services and Dementia (EACH) services, as well as the Home and Community Care (HACC) services. The communities served include Local Government Areas (LGAs) right across Western Sydney and beyond, including Baulkham Hills, Parramatta, Auburn, Holroyd, Blacktown, Penrith, Hawkesbury and the Blue Mountains LGAs.

In 1998, the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary moved to a more contemporary model of governance and formed a new Company known as Our Lady of Consolation Aged Care Services Ltd (OLOCACS) and assigned to this new company responsibility for the operation of the residential aged care and community aged care services.
